Telling a white lie is normal. Fear of your reaction (when presumably you're striving for a loving relationship) is not.
Either he is over-fearful (usually from past issues), or you react in a way that is overly upsetting/intimidating/hurtful toward him.
You mention he loves you so much, but do you love him?
For both your sakes, I would sit down and talk about it (possibly with professional mediation if he is too scared to be honest).
It sounds like you have some serious anger management issues, if he's that afraid of telling you the truth. Have you ever hit him? You've came close to it, haven't you? You know, the way you constantly put him down hurts just as much as a fist. If not more! It's never too late to get help.
