My gf when I worked for the rock bands in the 60's used to do that whenever I had to go to the airport to start a tour. I think it was her way of saying, "Whatever happens on the road, THIS is what you've got at home, buddy."
Of course, cars were huge in those days and traffic much less, so it wasn't near as dangerous as it would be in a Corolla.
