It's nice that you are fertilizing his plants, but it's also gross. I suggest using a better fertilizer such as horse manure, not your own. Surprise him with some horse manure for his garden, but be sure to provide information so he won't think you're bonkers.

Yes it's normal, I have even done this in my own garden.

Its great to dig a hole under a fruit tree, then fill that hole with a big steaming pile of shit... and to know that the tree will turn the steaming shit pile into sweet tasting fruit next summer.
