Is it normal to obsess over this?

So lately I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety related to driving, and early on one thing I kept being told was that there were various other things that could be just as dangerous, if not more. But I try to put myself in the shoes of the people who invented these things and wonder how they would feel if they knew about their inventions’ capabilities.

Like, if the Wright Brothers could witness 9/11, or the guy who invented cars (according to google Karl Benz is his name, it’s a common misconception that it was Henry Ford) could see all the accidents people have had, or if the people who invented swimming pools witnessed drowning, you get the idea.

My thoughts on this are too obsessive and detailed for this post, but the main points are these:

1. Even though I realize that a lot of good comes from these inventions, I have to wonder if it was really worth the price of all the lives lost as a direct result of them.

2. I don’t think I could ever be an inventor. Even if I were smart enough, my value of human life is too much for me to risk it.

3. The main thing I think I need to be convinced of is that the world, and humanity as a whole, would be much worse off without these things (mainly cars). There is one quote that comes to mind, “The Needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.” From Star Trek. I guess if they’ve saved more lives than they took that makes them worth it, but it’s still unfortunate that people can die from them.

Literally anything has the potential to be dangerous.

Sounds like you're afraid of progress. If everyone was like this then we'd all still be living in squalor, dying of painful diseases before we reached 30 and not understanding anything about the world around us. Progress has it's advantages.

Let's say for a minute Henry Ford invented the car.
    Just him.
Invented it, built it, mass produced it.
Your arguement is, if he hadnt.
The world would be better off.
    No car accidents. Right?
    But, if he didnt.
    Someone else, would have.
    For better or worse.
There is always a type of person looking to make life better.
You can use an ax to chop wood.
    Or, chop your neighbor.
Does that mean we shouldn't have axs?

Regardless, if there was never a single invention, you'd still die anyway.
