Is it normal to not want to go to the beach because you feel fat?

I've put on some weight this last year, not too much, but enough. And because I've gone up a size or two, I feel very insecure about going to the beach or the swimming pool, especially if it's with friends. I've started going to the gym a few days ago but I don't feel like showing my body until I lose some weight, and I turn down people's invitations. I feel they don't understand why I don't want to go, but on the other hand, people like to comment on your appearance all the time...

It's normal, but in the end people are always going to find something to laugh at. I used to be 200 pounds and got laughed at for my body jiggling. Years later, when I got down to 117 pounds, I got laughed at for being bony. Then two months ago, it was because I put on a little muscle. I'm at a point in my life where I just dont care. If someone wants to giggle at someone for how they look, that just shows how pathetic they are and I dont have time to deal with that shit. XD

First of all most people at the beach and the pool are not Victoria Secrets models. They are normal people just like you. Besides those who matter don't care and those who care don't matter. Don't miss out on anything in life because you think "someone" might not approve. Screw them.

Are you actually fat tho? Be objective about it. What does your doctor say?

The only thing you can do from there is improve what you have. Build muscle and lose fat, which I just so happen to do for a living!

    • Well, I don't think I'm in a stage where a doctor needs to talk to me, I think. I've never had a doctor tell me anything. My body mass index is 23.8. I just feel that's too much for me, since I was really skinny before. I do see myself fat now, and I hope I'll be able to go back to a weight I feel comfortable with.

Don't you do regular check ups with your doctor every 6 months or so? Just ask him then. 23.8 for a female isn't bad at all, but at the same time it could be better and is higher that what constitutes optimal attractiveness.

Doctors think everyone is hellboundly obese. We ALL have diabetes and heart disease, need to lose weight, and are ticking time bombs just waiting to keel over dead of a heart attack.

Thing with doctors is they are trying to make money for themselves and pharm companies. They cannot do that by giving people a clean bill of health.
Kind of like when you take the car on for an oil change and they manage to find $2,000 worth of repairs the car needs.

That happens every so often, but not on a large scale. Being overweight is unhealthy, and being morbidly obese is even less healthy. We don't all have obesity, diabetes and heart disease, just a lot of people do. My doctor told me to gain weight away back when. Obesity is a crisis none the less, regardless of whether or not your doctor is a fuckwad, which it sounds like he is.

In the 1980's, the big scare was AIDS and 1984 (similar to the Y2K scare). If we didn't die of that, then a nuclear holocaust would get us.

By the 90's, it was the rapture. Yep, surely in 1993, God was gonna send all the sinner to hell. The rest of the decade was about how we were all gonna be micro-chipped.

2000's, it was mosquito, flying cow, or duck disease that was going to kill us all.

NOW in 2010's, we are all obese and have diabetes blah blah blah.

As you are fairly young, you may not have noticed the world's pattern of constantly inventing new scares or dates that the sky is going to fall. But yeah, soon after the 20's arrives, it will be some new gloom and doom. Then the 30's will bring a new one...

BTW if I am not mistaken, you are too young to remember even the Y2K scare, no?

My point is, the media leads people around by the nose telling them about the next thing that is going to kill us all. It gets hard to take it serious after a while.

I agree with the concept you propose 100 percent. And not as many people are as obese as the media may lead you to believe. And many obese people are healthier than you would think as well. However, even tho its often overblown, the facts remain. More people are obese than ever before, and that number is growing. And being obese(clinically defined, not subjectively) is bad for your health.

It's an overblown effect, but still an effect. But most people won't be as open minded to see the other side unlike yourself, which gives you respect from people like me.

Just a note that obese people that get lots of aerobic exercise will have normal fasting glucose, and are not pre-diabetic in any way. Regular exercise works wonders.

it may be true. You can do positive things about it by getting into better shape.

You're fine; don't be a wimp about it. Many people who aren't fat think they are, and many people who are fat think they aren't. Seriously, though, you probably look just fine.

Probably since I have the opposite problem I’m underweight but I know I avoided the beach last year after I got laughed at by the person I thought had a crush on me as I had one on him for almost a year and called a white rake by one of his friends I haven’t been back since.

    • I'm sorry that happened to you. I know, people can be mean, even though everybody loves to talk about how you "should love yourself" and such nowadays, lots of those same people will comment on your looks or give free unwanted advice like "you need to go the gym", or just "playfully" tease you about it.

At least now you know that guy wasn't worth it. I bet you look lovely <3 I understand why you would want to avoid going back, that's what I'm afraif of: to go to the beach with the desire of having a good time just for someone to give me some hurtful comment that will stuck in my head. And that's why I can't relax, because I'm thinking it will happen, or maybe they will just judge my body in silence. So the whole beach idea stops being appealing with that in mind. Not worth the trouble it seems.

  • Best for fat people to avoid the beach or environmentalists might mistake them for beached whales and spend hours trying to drag them back into the sea.
