  • It is normal and actually a stress relief mechanism for many of us. I grew up with the pillowcase scenario and especially like the case to be colder and to be a heavy thread count for softness. Be careful trying to break this behavior, as I found out the hard way it should not be done without a replacement stress relief to go to. In college I tried to break the habit, as I felt the need to rub fabric when I studied hard. In the end I nearly had to undergo surgery on my jaw. Luckily I spoke up and asked a doctor about what was happening and told her about the pillowcase rubbing. She immediately told me it was a stress relief mechanism and that by not having something else to deal with the stress, I was clenching my jaw at night and that was how my body decided to deal with the stress. She said to go back to doing it and within two weeks, no jaw aches. It is no different from nervous ticks, such as tapping your foot, twirling a pencil, or kneading a stress ball. Difference is the instrument that we chose to relieve that stress with. I am 40 and dealing with a lot of stress at work. I have not rubbed a pillowcase for years and have started again as I have developed inflammation within the fat cells of my legs, called Erythema Nodosum (red bumps), which can result in other immune problems and vascular issues. It is all tied into stress and how my body does not deal well with it. Since I have started rubbing a pillowcase again I have not had an outbreak and the last out break started subsiding immediately without having to go on medication. Something to think about for the doctors out there!
