No, most dogs that were raised with people are not ready to live in the wild, and if dog shelters where you live kill the animals, odds are they will catch him and kill him anyway, that if something else does not kill him first. Even if you left him far away, he will try to come back to town. The best option was to find another home for him. If you can still look for him and do so, I strongly reccommend it.
