  • I like classical music too, but that would somehow scare me to admit it among other people (espacially those who like it as well - paradoxically) because I'm totally clueless about it from the technical point of view. I don't know the meaning of all that sygnifying in the titles and stuff. AT ALL. I just enjoy the sound of music.

I still kinda get your friends for feeling like listening to classical music is a thing for snobs. Why? Because there really are lots of snobs who think they are better than anyone else just because they listen to classical music. Or because they can play chess. Or do some other "elegant and intelligent" things. But your friends shouldn't judge you anyway, especially if you're nice in general.

P.S. What are your favourite Chopin compositions? I started to listen to his music only a few days ago (yeah, delving into new stuff because of more free time on holiday) and I don't really understand why people love him so much (which is a bit of a crime because I'm Polish). Which pieces/concertos/etc. composed by him would you recommend?

    • Well said. You pretty much summed up most of my thoughts about it.

I can't stand people who treat music like a fashion statement as opposed to just listening to it for their own personal entertainment. You can always tell someone doesn't genuinely enjoy music when they feel the constant need to talk bad about other genres. Classical music isn't a higher art form than other genres of music, just a different flavor, and I hate being grouped in with the snobs who think one piece of art can be objectively better than another. It's not just the classical community either. Pretty much every non-mainstream genre has those obnoxious people who run around screaming "GEE WHIZ GUYS THIS MUSIC SURE IS BETTER THAN JUSTIN BIEBER LIKE IF YOU AGREE", and then all the sane people who legitimately enjoy the music get stereotyped alongside those idiots as being hipsters.

I don't have any friends IRL by the way. The judgment I'm talking about comes from strangers or acquaintances making small talk. They don't outright say they think I'm pretentious, but I can tell they're thinking it, because they'll ask questions afterwards like "are you rich?", etc. If I did have friends though, I wouldn't feel the need to be a carbon copy of them. I don't think it's that important to have a lot in common with a friend, just that you enjoy their personality overall. The only reason I have a desire to conform and project a false image of myself is because I know it would improve my ability to influence people. I think it's important to be yourself around close friends and family, but when you're trying to bolster your public image to get that promotion, for instance, being viewed as pretentious by your peers due to your tastes is a big disadvantage. You know what I mean?

      My favorite Chopin compositions are.
      1.Etude Op.10 No.3
      2.Ballade Op.23 No.1
      3.Etude Op. 25 No.5
      4.Nocturne Op.48 No.1
      5.Nocturne Op.9 No.2

      • I get what you mean. Sad to see you don't have any real friends though. And that you feel like not being yourself can somehow help you... But good luck getting that public promo :P!

P.S. Thanks for sharing your favourite Chopin stuff. Boutta listen to those pieces, I'm happy to have almost all of them played by Evgeny Kissin on YT.
