  • I guess it's a reasonable thing to do if you want to die and wish your final moments to be extremely unpleasant.

The early symptoms of pufferfish poisoning include tingling in the extremities, drooling, sweating, headache, weakness, paralysis, inability to speak and seizures. There can also be vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Unless treated, this is followed by paralysis the diaphragm and death by asphyxiation. Up to the point that the victim loses consciousness due to their inability to breathe, their mental processes remain unaffected, so they're aware that they've lost control of their body.

But since you're interested, you probably already know all that, and you probably also know that Japan requires fugu chefs to be trained for two years and then undergo a stringent test before they're allowed to serve pufferfish sushi to the public.

From what I've read, pufferfish isn't particularly wonderful to eat. I can only conclude people eat it for the same reasons that some people free-climb mountains, base-jump from skyscrapers, sit on the edge of a crumbling cliff with their legs dangling over the edge and eat Tide Pods.
