Is it normal to have knee pain after long walks/runs?

I am 25 years old, Male, in the Computer Programming profession, and I play video game. I don't get a lot of exorcise on a daily basis. Every once in a while I try to mitigate this by going for walks or runs. Afterwards my right knee will hurt a lot, especially going down stairs. It always heals up after a day or two, but it's a bit scary. Is this normal and do I just need to exorcise daily and work up to longer walks and runs, or is this something I should see a doctor about?

  • That's what tends to happen when a fat person with underdeveloped muscles suddenly puts a bunch of strain and force on his joints. Work on your core and slow down.

  • How old are you? if it clears up its most likely an overuse injury...you can try a knee brace or sleeve...it could be a number of things and it could make it more likely to get arthritis or other osteo issues later..it could be anything from alignment issues to bad shoes....make sure you have running shoes and run heel to toe and try softer surfaces like those tracks at most schools

  • Have you ever taken glucosamine chondroitin and or fish oil supplements? Those can help. I don't know about your weight situation, but people who are overweight do tend to have more joint problems.

  • You need to walk more regularly for shorter distances and then work up. Great that you do get away from the screen sometimes!
