I used to suffer from panic attacks and still get palpitations every now and again, and whenever I do it feels a little like what you've described, it feels like I zone out and yet go hyper aware, really weird.
I would suggest you talk to a doctor, as like you said, it could be dangerous under certain circumstances such as driving.
I wouldn't worry too much though
I've actually thought about this a while ago, and I was considering this being the case. You see, i only seem to get the feeling when I'm alone. And when I was small, my mom and dad left me with my aunt when mom went into labor. I don't remember this much, but my mother tells me i hated when they left, and got really upset. So, since i started getting these around that age, i thought it could be panic attacks.
The only thing that gets me is that I don't feel scared at all. I am so calm during these feelings, so i don't get it.
IIN to have a fast feeling warning: long read/i promise i'm no troll

When you got panic attacks, were you scared?
