  • What is the "issue" you believe you need counselling to help you overcome?

Have you hated Santa Claus ever since you found out he doesn't exist?

I could understand how learning that your parents and other adults had conspired to lie to you about the existence of a fictional being might make you doubt everything they said to you after you learned Santa was make-believe. You might dislike your parents for that or even be angry with them, but hating Santa makes no sense at all.

Do you also hate the Roman god Saturn, the Hindu deity Rama, and the Aztec god Huitzilopochtli? None of them exist any more than JHVH, Yahwhe, Jehova or whatever else you want to call the Judeo-Christian deity.

Since you refer to your actions as being "sinful", it seems that you haven't really grasped the nettle and truly accepted that the big, ancient hairy guy up in the clouds who looks down on you and makes notes in his book about whether you're being naughty or nice doesn't actually exist. Until you do, you're going to feel conflicted because the rational part of your brain is arguing with the deeply embedded indoctrination you received as a child.

You say you've been troubled by the thought that morality and a feeling that life is meaningful isn't possible without belief in a transcendental being and an afterlife. That's total bullshit peddled by people who are True Believers in one of the many brands of religious crap. Sometimes they push this line for the same reason that owners of a particular brand of car suggest you buy the same: if you do too, that validates their decision. Often, they try to sell you this because they have a financial interest in making you accept their beliefs as The One and Only Truth.

It is true that following the rules in a book handed down from a bunch of Iron Age people who were doing their best to make sense of a confusing world makes life much easier. Figuring out what you believe is moral can be difficult, and living by those rules can be even harder, since the only true judge is the one inside your own head. But if you live your life always trying to do what Daddy says you should, then you're still a child.

    • Actually, I truly believe in the Abrahamic God's existence and I never said otherwise. So I don't hate someone doesn't exist.

      • The Old Testament makes it perfectly clear that JHVH is a vindictive, narcissistic dickhead who was quite happy to torture and slaughter anyone who didn't sing his praises. Some people claim he underwent a major personality change a couple thousand years ago (which would be odd for a being that's supposedly perfect, eternal and changeless), but if you insist on believing in that particular version of the Great Sky Fairy, then you're just going to have to own your discomfort at trying to keep him happy.

        Enjoy.

        • I guess this personality change was the new testament?

And "which would be odd for a being that's supposedly perfect, eternal and changeless" is kind of what I thought too. Just not in those exact words.
