Is it normal to give my social number to the financial aid office of the university

I contacted the financial aid office for the univ and they told me to filled out Fafsa and i did after that he told me to give him my social number and date of birth so that he can check the results and determin how much aid would be eligible for , should i give him my ssn or there is a risk

    Yeah, they need that because it’s a federal financial aid, they use it to look up your history and how much money they think you deserve. Also, you could just ask them why they need it instead of asking an online forum. A university is most likely never going to scam you like that

    There's always a risk giving that information out.

    Most things can be checked on by just using the last 4 digits so if you don't feel good about giving the whole number out, ask if last 4 will do.

    Also, not all places that ask for the number are entitled to it or need it. You have the right to ask why your number is needed, what happens if you don't give it and how it will be kept safe/who will have access to it/how will it be used. A good example of a place that doesn't (typically) need it (just wants it) is a doctor's office.
