Is it normal to get pissed off at a sushi restaurant because you're poor

my rich friend asked if my boyfriend and i wanted to go get sushi with her and her boyfriend. at first i was like "nahh...we can't afford such food". then i started thinking about it and it sounded really really good and i was hungry so i decided to go and it seemed like the best idea ever until i looked at the menu and i couldn't decide what to get because everything sounded so good but it was so expensive. My friend was looking at me weird because she spends money like this all the time, it's no big deal. but it's a big deal to me, the last time i went out for sushi it was my birthday. my boyfriend kept telling me he's buy me anything i wanted but that made me feel worse because i feel uncomfortable ordering expensive food. So i ended up not getting anything and then told my boyfriend that his spicy tuna roll looked nasty and i refused to try it.

Is It Normal?

  • sorry but you should not go to restaurants with people, it would be a painful experience going to a restaurant with you.

    • I agree. It's not the end of the world if you order an expensive meal for once, especially if he offered paying. If it was q big deal to him, he probably wouldn't have offered.
Also, it's irrational to feel angry if you went we long already knowing you 'cant afford such food'.
Lastly, not all sushi places are expensive, so next time if you want to eat sushi, aim for a different place. I wouldn't go TOO cheap though. seafood poisoning is a bitch.

  • Look for a place that will do all you can eat and lunch. It's not a steal perhaps but you can usually get sushi for like 10-12$ all you can eat. You can even stay in late and make it a brunch thing that will last.

  • There is a rule of thumb for exactly this situation, no shit!
When invited out to eat by someone and you are uncomfortable about their paying for food you normally couldn't afford, see what they are ordering and pick something of equal, or lesser cost. If they choose the most expensive thing on the menu, you are free to do the same, guilt free.
    Have fun.
