Is it normal to get affended when people speak other languages around you?

Is it just me, or do you guys get a little affended when a person can speak english, but they talk and giggle in Spanish/other language around you.
Sometimes I get the feeling that Im being talked about in a negative way being that they wont say it in English. Especially if they keep staring/glancing at me. Makes me wanna slap the shit out of them! If its not affensive, why wont they say it in english since they can speak it?

I've sometimes wondered if I'm being talked about when one or more of those conversing keep looking at me.

That's why I've learned the phrase "incredibly stylish man" in all world languages. Just so I know if they really are talking about me.

  That reminds me. I had an Iranian friend who used to do this before he became more fluent in English (He spoke Farsi). He had me fooled for a while; I thought he understood what I was saying. Eventually, I started asking him if he understood what I had just said... He'd give me the serious face and say "No." Then we'd have a real laugh about that.

My country is officially a multicultural nation and most people here are pretty accepting of cultural and language differences. For years, I used to live in a city where practically everyone around me was speaking a language other than English and it never bothered me. Also, there's a large population of international students at my university, so I am constantly around people speaking in languages that I don't understand a word of. I like it.

The staring and laughing is rude. Communicating in a language that may feel more comfortable for them to use is not.

I am bilingual. Actually english is my second language and i am more comfortable when i speak my own language but i am fluently in english. So i speak my own language when i and my gfs are around with strangers, it is more comfy than speaking english next to them. Mostly i speak english-my language together!

Depends on the context, I suppose. In highschool, I had two friends who would speak Tagalog to each other in front of the group when English was their first language. :\

    Yeah. I live in the UK and people are quite racist in my town. When I'm out with my friends, I usually don't speak with them if there's many people around, because I get strange looks from people. Some of them are rude enough to call us "f$%#ing foreign d#*&heads".

If they're speaking another language and looking at you is only natural that you'd think they're speaking about you.

I remember one time in school this girl and I were speaking Spanish, and another girl came to us telling us to "stop talking shit about her when she can't understand" when we were just talking about clothes. We told her what we were talking about and she didn't believe us. I found it to be funny. You'd be surprised the times I've said something in Spanish to someone and they thought I was saying something bad or cursing them out when I was actually saying I'm hungry or something.

If they keep glancing over at you and talking and laughing that's understandable. You don't always need to know what someone is saying to conclude that they are talking about you or making fun of you.

  It seems kind of two-faced and cowardly to me. Why talk about somebody in a language you know they probably wouldn't understand (basicall behind their back). If you have something to say to or about me, say it to my face! Know what I mean?
