Is it normal to feel bad about this?

I’ve talked extensively about this subject, but there’s one detail I feel especially bad about. So in high school I became good friends with a girl who I had a crush on, and I increasingly became more protective over her. We both had fears related to driving, but eventually she managed to get through it and start driving, whereas all these years later I still don’t feel ready. This especially makes me feel bad because she told me that once when she was younger she was in a car that flipped over, and I’ve never been through anything nearly that bad! It was also scary to imagine her being in any kind of danger, because like I said I became protective, probably overprotective. I just feel awful that I’m so worked up over this when people who have been through so much worse than me can somehow do just fine!

I just got my driver's license a few months ago, and I can say this.

In the beginning it's f***ing terrifying. Everything is so fast, and in my mind I always think "if something were to happen I wouldn't have the time to react".

But now, even though I always get a bit nervous while driving, it's becoming easier. I'm sure over the years this will pass to me.

However, my grandmother took a license card and she accidentally ran over someone. Although that person didn't die and didn't suffer much from the crash either, she had a trauma so bad it was the first and last time she ever drived.

There's no way to see what the future will tell. But I believe even though you have this fear, you don't want to. You want to overcome it. And your attitude is always the starting point.

Also never never never compare the reasons of other people's fears to yours. It doesn't matter if someone had a horrible experience of even a trauma and they got through it, and you're too scared even if you have no strong reason. It doesn't matter: the fact is you're scared. You have a reason to be scared, and a will to overcome it too, like everyone else.

It's just not you, it's with everyone. You cared about that girl and were concerned and afraid that she'll go through that accident again. Even if people might not share this fear with you, they have others regarding the people they care.

I am terrified of driving. I feel awkward and uncomfortable behind the wheel, like I don't know what I am doing. Yes, it bothers me. When I see other people drive, I am amazed at what they can do. I feel that people who can drive are very talented. I have struggled with this for years. I hope you can get over this fear. Good luck!
