Is it normal to feel awkward around family, even though you get along well?

I don't really know how to connect with most of my closest family as an adult, but I miss them so much and wish we were closer. I'm afraid to go to their house because it might be an inconvenience to them. I know I could just text beforehand, but I don't know what to say. One is coming over to visit soon and I just took a shot of 151 proof rum and a couple anti-anxiety supplements in hopes of calming my nerves (and I'm STILL nervous tbh, might need another shot). is it normal to feel that awkward about family that you are closest to?

I experience the same thing. My family doesn't really fight, but I feel so awkward and uncomfortable when I see my family.

You know what would help? Like how you take a shot, do the same with your family. Just walk up to them like you knew them forever, With confidence. You can trick your brain into being confortable around your family.

Have you sought any therapy for your anxiety?

I'm sorry to hear that the therapy didn't really help.

Is your family dysfunctional? When you were growing up was there any abuse, or neglect? Did your parents abuse any substances?

        • Not at all, that's what's so strange about it. I love my family more than anything, so I feel terrible not being comfortable with them. The only reason I can think of why I'm like this is because they were a bit judgmental of me, so I am still worried that they might think I'm weird or stupid if I do anything wrong (even though their judgmental comments thankfully stopped once I became an adult).

Yeah, being overly judgmental can be a form of abuse. About what were they judgemental?
