  • If you're expected to critique them in the situation you're in (like, if it's a singing contest or you're a music teacher giving them a lesson), then it's normal. If they didn't ask or you're not in a situation where you're there to critique singing, then no, it's not normal and you shouldn't do it.

    The reason for this is that singing is is something people get very possessive of and nervous about. It's like when someone wears an outfit and says 'I feel great in this outfit! It's also the only one I have that doesn't make my bum look big. What do you think?'. You probably already know that you shouldn't say, 'Actually, that one makes your bum look big, too', even if that's true. Singing is similar to bodies and clothes in this respect.

    Most people have enough negative judgments about their singing AND their appearance coming from inside their own minds, and anything you say might just crush their feelings if it's critical and they weren't expecting or wanting criticism.
