Is it normal to carry a pocket knife instead of a spray for self defense?

I work as a student engineer and often use several pocket tools/ multi tools for quick tasks. When I am not working, I still carry these tools with me as I feel like I'd be mor threatening with a knife than a pink bottle of pepper spray. Is this a good alternative or am I asking for more trouble?

I carry a knife too but I am also a martial artist and I am trained to defend myself with one. If you don't know how or can't use it then don't. Get pepper spray instead and stay safe

To use a knife you have to be in close range and if someone is fast they can snatch it away from you or even use the knife on you, that's why it's safer to carry a spray that you can use from a distance that can also paralyze them for a while, whereas with a knife if you don't get a good hit then the other person might get angry and start attacking you even worse. So it's tough to say.

First off you actually have to have the balls to use a knife in self defense. Most people don't have the guts to do what it takes to stick someone. If you pull out a knife in self defense, be prepared to have it wrenched out of your hand and shoved up your ass (repeatedly). You are better off with the spray because you can use that from a safe distance and still have the opportunity to run for your life. Getting close enough to use a knife may only get you a long stay in the hospital or even a longer one in a casket.

    • Very true. My self defense skills are substandard and i have cut my fingers more times than the amount of fingers i have. Should probably start carrying the spray.

It's been said already, if you pull out a knife be ready to use it, if you freeze up you just gave your attacker another weapon.

why do you feel the need to carry anything for self-defence? I know a man who teaches self- defence and his advice if confronted by anybody with a knife or other weapon is simple! RUN RUN RUN.

I carry a knife too, but for defense I would rather go for a gun. Spray as a second option.

    • It's one thing to own a gun. It's another thing to own a gun and live in Chicago.

In many countries it is a problem due to "requirements". But going on a road trip nothing beats the feeling of being prepared to resist.
