I think that there is some logic in what your friend said. I mean when you think about it, America plays favorites with minorities. We offer scholarships to minorities. We allow minorities to sue on discrimination. Due to America trying to make up for its bigotry, Caucasians have sort of been bumped down in most social situations. However, I wouldn't necessarily say that Caucasians have "the hardest lives" in America, that is completely up to the individual.
Oh I'm sure a Sheik living here would totally agree with you, those poor souls suffering the injustice of making the most money (statistically and factually speaking), having the most politicians and voices in the government (statistically and factually speaking), holding more positions as CEOs of major corporations (statistically and factually speaking), and being part of the majority which has generally had all of these benefits since the founding of the country. Statistically and factually, speaking, of course.
Yeah, paying everyone less, still clinging to old racial stereotypes, still not having any real numbers to back up any idea of equality in the workplace, and otherwise continuing to dominate the scene... it must be just really tough. Those damn scholarships given out by a tiny minority of generous souls to other minorities are a major way for "The Man" to keep the white male down.
Morality and theory aside, if you were to use mathematics to determine which race & gender has the highest % chance of succeeding with high-profile jobs, annual income, political power, quality and standards of living, and social acceptance... it's "white, male".
I guess the math adds up. However, I do think that the individual can chose whether he wants to work hard towards earning a lot of money or being a shirker. I'll admit that whites have had a head start in most countries, especially in America, since they are the ones who found it, but we're slowly starting to evolve as humans and become more tolerant of others.
but getting hung up in petty things like "affirmative action is unfair to whites" just kind of holds back that progress.
As much as a white man can say "we've advanced enough as a society, that a black man from the ghetto can get to Harvard Law if he applies himself", a black man can easily say "A white man can put himself through college without financial help from the NAACP if he applies himself"
I, for one, look forward to the day when we ALL say "Anyone can make it to the top, if they apply themselves." while providing an equal opportunity for everyone.
When you say "dumped down in most social situations", you mean...what? Because I'm sure you've visited both predominantly white and predominantly black neighborhoods, and presumably, have noticed the aching differences in the ways of life. I feel like, after a lifetime of horrors, if a "minority" child can come out from underneath the rubble with ambition and positive momentum...fcuk yeah give him a scholarship to a great school. Said scholarships are there to level the playing field (granted that they are allotted on merit).
Well...sorta. I mean, the government doesn't give college funds to minorities only (correct me if I'm wrong about that, but I'm 99% sure it's true)....so 'we' don't, private organizations do, and that doesn't 'take away' from white guys at all. It's also not impossible for a white person to get a minority scholarship. There's also 'white-focused' scholarships (some cultural ones, for example). As far as discrimination goes, in most cases the same law applies to everyone, so anyone can sue if they've been unlawfully discriminated against-except Affirmative Action-but that doesn't apply to all employers, and it's questionable that it's even really effective, and even more rare that anyone can TRULY claim that they didn't get the job because of some minority or woman (people like to claim that, but the truth of the matter is usually something else entirely). Usually people who are just failures in general are the ones who claim that these things hurt them. Or they've never actually been affected by any of these things and are just spewing crap that they don't even know about.
lol, I just came across this: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/07/02/texan-wins-controversial-white-man-scholarship/
The subject of Affirmative Action is questionable if it even works. However, I do agree that in some cases people didn't the job because of something else that is not race based.
IIN to believe that white men in the US have the hardest lives?

I think that we are getting to that point in society. Sometime in our lifetime that will be achieved.

In all honesty "bumped down" was the only word that came to mind. I couldn't really think of a better phrase.
