Is it normal to be confused as to what modern feminism actually is

Could someone distil for me the reason why modern feminists exist, the rationale for their behavior and what they actually hope to achieve by championing the cause of modern feminism.

Also what it actually means to be a modern feminist and when people choose to call themselves moderm feminists why do they do so?

Yes it is. 5
No it is not. 5
Does anyone actually know. 4
I don't know but they sure are shouty and scary. 9

Feminism is about equality. Ignore whatever the crazies on the news are doing and decide for yourself.

Maybe you should ask someone who calls herself a "modern feminist" what she means by it? I've been a feminist (the Women's Liberation/Anarcha Feminist since the 70's and was a feminist before that without knowing I was.

There has NEVER been one form of feminism: there have always been Feminisms, plural, and always will be, because feminism isn't an organisation as much as a movement. The feminisms which get the publicity are the middle class academics and the extreme radicals, at least that's how it's always been in Australia and from what I know, elsewhere as well.

        • That is why I asked on here. I have seen at least one user on there today claim that she is a modern feminist. I won't reveal the user's name because if she doesn't want to interact I don't wish to obligate her to do so.

It's still about equality. The nut jobs that shout abuse at men for no reason aren't feminists, they're nut jobs.

        • So, so called modern feminism has been infiltrated by crazies & misandrists that are a tiny minority . Is that right?

They're such a tiny minority that they don't exist. They're a fabrication created by misogynists to try to discredit feminism to get the uninformed on their side.

But you do get the crazies who split from the group to further the cause in the extreme.

To be a modern feminist means to be a fat chick who drinks at Starbucks with her other fat chicks over hype over every single new movie in theatres and make food reviews on Youtube.

It's basically the female equivalent of male InCel misogyny.

It seems to be normal on the internet to confuse feminism with things that aren't feminism at all. Feminism is the belief that people of any gender are equal and should have equal rights.

Modern feminism has twisted from its original meaning. One of the biggest lies you hear from feminists is "feminism is just about equality." Well ya know North Korea's government is just about the people and democracy, after all it's called the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea." Don't buy the bullshit, tbh even if you do buy most people just turn away from it because modern feminism is so obviously not about what first wave and second wave feminism was.

Don't buy the parent comment's bullshit. Asking an anti-feminist what feminism means is like asking a KKK member what the civil rights movement is about. Ask an actual feminist what they mean by feminism, or look it up in the dictionary, and you'll hear something about support for gender equality.

Many feminists like NOW also advocate for equality beyond gender equality, as well, and feminism is one component of the larger struggle for equality for all.

  • I don’t know what the difference is really between old and modern feminism, but since I’m only 17 I call my a modern feminist.

I believe women should be just as respected as men and have equal rights to run for office and go into whatever job they want.
I also believe that the patriarchy and rape culture we still have here in America is completely unacceptable and dangerous.
I believe that while things have definitely improved for women, there’s still more work to do.
I believe the legal system needs to change the way it deals with victims of rape and sexual assault and instead of automatically being suspicious that they are lying and aggressively interrogating them, they need to be kind and look at all the facts and focus on things that actually matter, not like what the woman was wearing or if she was drinking when it happened.

I don’t believe it’s disrespectful to display chivalry to women (and men). If someone opens the door for me I say thank you. It’s a display of kindness and respect.

I’m also majorly angered by things like FGM, and I will fight fiercely to stop it!

I’m anti misogyny, anti victim blaming, anti cat calling, anti harassment, and anti violence.

I believe that anyone who has been proven to be guilty of rape or pedophilia should receive life in prison or the death sentence.

That’s basically the gist of it.

  • Thank you, everything is starting to become a little clearer. The basic tenets I understand and only a fool would believe that we live in a society where equality truly exists.

The "wishy-washy social side" is where it all unravels for me, perhaps it is a part of the movement that I will never understand. To me it smacks of general malcontentment and general insecurity precipitated by forces other than gender inequality. Crusading and that some people have latched on to modern feminism because it is de rigeur to do so.

A movement that has become misunderstood, maligned and some of those marching under the banner of modern feminism have probably done more damage than good to the cause of simple 'meat and pototoes' feminism.
