  • The problem comes in when ppl say I have PTSD because I was abused as a child. PTSD usually comes from seeing/doing horrific things (like combat or first responders), rape, severe and prolonged mental abuse, and things the normal mind doesn’t know how to handle. It doesn’t come from typical sibling or parent/offspring relationships - and the latter is posted here much more frequently than the former with claims of PSTD. Every human on the planet gets anxious at one time or another too. That doesn’t mean they suffer from PTSD and/or need to be medicated. People have to learn to live, handle or deal with some hard situations without seeking therapy. Life simply isn’t puppies and ice cream every single day.

    • People do get PTSD from child abuse. The person I mentioned was severely abused as a child and has PTSD as a result. If you think being yelled at occasionally or typical punishments is abuse then you don't even know what you are talking about. I wouldn't say I have PTSD, but I have seen horrific things including stuff you mentioned. It is nothing compared to what others experience, such as someone who was raised as a feral child.

      • I will say I have witnessed murder, I have lost many people close to me to horrible things, I have been in many emotionally abusive situations, I was severely bullied as a child, I have had a few other tragic experiences that were not normal.
I probably do not meet diagnostic criteria for PTSD. I did develop some anger management problems and trust issues.
I do know a few people with actual PTSD and their experiences were much worse than my own. It is not a bullshit thing caused by small problems that everyone has.

      • If you think everyone has a good childhood you are incredibly ignorant. It annoys me that people refuse to believe actual horror stories when they clearly see them in the news.

        • Ok. I suppose I took your statement as child abuse doesn't cause PTSD based off the first sentence.

          • an no, being grounded, scolded or spankings does not count unless it was excessive and unreasonable, which is also mental abuse if someone is punishing their children for things they didn't do wrong.

    • Being called a few names and getting slapped about by a class mate once or twice does not cause PTSD. Cutting half dead people out of cars and then cleaning up after those horrendous road traffic collisions causes PTSD. Both of which I know of only too well.

      • I don't know anyone who claims being called names and problems with a classmate caused PTSD. You have obviously lived a sheltered life.

        • Just because you personally haven't met anyone doesn't mean they don't exist. I know they do, I have friends whose kids are claiming they have PTSD for exactly that! I've sat and listened to them tell everyone round the dinner table, more than once.

I'm very impressed. You gleaned all that information regarding my 'sheltered life' from a few blocks of text on a very specific subject on this site. Your powers of telepathy are astounding.
