Is it normal to ask deliberately inflammatory questions?

Oh heck, I know it is but why? I guess some people like the thrill of people berating them knowing that they cannot face any consequences. It just seems like a very weird "hobby." Like they're some kind of weird non-sexual, internet sadist.
