Is it normal to ask a person how many freinds they have?

I do not mean on facebook. I mean in real life. As a child I use to get picked on and didnt have many. Even when doing well in school the question still came up. One time I had a teacher ask "do you even have any freinds"? I named off 5 people I always hung around. This was a teacher/parent type of meeting so had multiple adults. Everyone just started shaking thier heads as though ashamed of me. Probobly thought I was lying. In 9th grades I was told I needed a freind in every single class. Even though the classes I had freinds often got in trouble for mot focusing but I was gettings Bs. As an adult I was asked "who are your freinds here" and I named them off. I later told a coworker and they acted as though this is a very rude question. Is this question rude?

I think it's a weird question. But holy shit, that teacher asking "do you even have any friends" is so rude and fucked up. Did that really happen? If so, I feel really sorry for little you.
Anyway I think it's a strange question. But it depends, at a party someone might ask who you know (at the party) just to make conversation. I guess that's ok.

But if it's to sus you out somehow, or to imply that you don't have many friends, then yeah it's weird and rude. I dunno, it just seems odd.

Someone asked me that once. I misheard them and thought they were asking if I had any friends in that place or if I lived with friends or something, so I replied completely matter-of-factly without the slightest bit of hesitation or embarrassment "No". It was funny then cos they were the one who got all embarrassed and didn't know what to say (and that was the only reason I realised I had misheard them and realised what they had actually asked).

They ask it to me too :(
I get a feeling they are trying to start a conversation and they have no idea what to say
