Is it normal think the majority of white people are racist/ignorant to racism?

I am an AA girl, I speak proper english, am very kind and polite, and don't display any type of negative black stereotype. I go to an 88% white school and deal with occasional racism everyday, so it's something I've grown used to. But today it has gone to far. I was called a nigger. Yes, a nigger, by a white person. For what reason, I have no idea. I had no contact with this person and was walking down the street, in the rain, while they drove by in their car. Yet they felt the need to yell out their car window and call me a nigger as I walked to the bus stop from work. I'm so sick of America, and it hurts to know people will never see me as just me because of my skin color. I know not all white people are racist, but it's getting hard not believe most aren't.

  • They're judging you based on your skin color, assuming you're like the stereotype of an ignorant black person. Please don't stereotype all white people the same way! We're not all like that- I certainly am not. If you think that way you're becoming just like them.

Yeah you're right. But I'm not stereotyping all white people, it's just when things like this happens, and so many other black people have gone through it, I start to wonder if the majority really are racist. And I guess the minority would be my friends who are white, this guy I dated, other sane people who I don't know at all, and of course you and the other nice commenters on here.

90% of white people are racist. Be happy though. They brought the whole world together by making us all hate them. By 2050 we will have 4 times the GDPs they have and that'll be when you'll get to be racist against them! Bear it well now...cause you'll get a great amount of vengeance in a few decades

To even read his story and be offended you are being very insensitive to his situation and acting as if he's complaining or targeting you because u r white. You can't sweep racism under the rug. It's alive and white people enslaving Africans breathed the most life into the idea of racism in America so it's an ugly part of this world and the people who discriminate need to be made of aware how they affect others. You can't fight fire with fire. You can't defend an entire race of people against the individual perpetrators, situations needs to be isolated and dealt with it individually. You have no right to feel offended by this kids feelings.

I am a white teenage girl and I am not racist at all. But my parents seem to be very racist against Mexicans and African Americans. And of course I tell them to not talk like that around me or anyone else. Yes I think it is normal to think that white people are ignorant and racist. Because it's the truth, most of us are.

You are being racist yourself. In reality, the out-spoken minority of all races are racist. In other words, the large majority of people are not at all racist, or at least not in a way that affects their everyday life, but the ones that are are can be so aggressive that we remember them, and come to think of their views as the norm, when they are in fact a tiny minority.

How am I being racist by having an opinion about racist people? And when did I assume that MY opinion was the thought of the majority? Also, when does calling out racism an act of being outspoken in a negative way?

You obviously misunderdstood me. I never said that you were the majority, if anything I implied the opposite. If I did say you were the majority, it was because over 50% think that this normal.

I never said that your opinions about racists were racist, I mean that your views about white people, and that they are mostly racists, was racist. I may have sounded ambiguous in my comment, so sorry I'm if it wasn't very well written. ;)

That is quite sad and unfortunate. Just like you do not fit the negative stereotype you mentioned, many whites do not fit the racist stereotype. It's unfortunate but tge fact is in majority of races, there are a lot of ignorant behaving people that reflect poorly on the human race. Just hold your head high girl and no regardless of color that you are in the 2% of the intelligent population. Don't allow ignorance of people of any race bring you down to their judgmental small minded state of being.

As a white gay female professional, I have faced a lot of uncomfortable situations and judgements from small minded people. Allow it to make you stronger and smarter. ;)

Take comfort in the fact that you aren't as miserable and ignorant as those that put you down.

I'm a white girl, but am not racist whatsoever. I have friends of several different races, including African American. And they're true friends, we'd do anything for each other. However, I am totally aware that loads of people are racist, which is just totally wrong and doesn't make any sense. I hate that racism even exists. We all are human beings and originated from the same parents. It's just very wrong to put one race, culture, or nationality over another. Everyone should be treated equally, regardless of their appearance or beliefs. Racism makes me very upset.

Personally I think it's rather racist to judge an entire skin color off of one person's comment.

When you judge an entire race off of one person's actions, you are NO better than the ones you call "racist".

Racism not only means the fear and hatred of a person of a certain color. It also means seeing that person as inferior (whether conscious or not), thus leading the racist to treat this person as a non-human being. This leads to the racist not caring, considering or just not relating to this "inferior being's" feelings or life. I feel that most white people are like this because most don't even acknowledge the racist mind-set they were taught from society and/or parents/family. And they live in a world where everything benefits them being white. Being white (especially here in America) is the standard, the right, the real, the truth. The media glorifies whiteness (the hero, the beauty, the good guy, the human being that represents humanity, and Jesus, who is painted with light brown hair and blue eyes!)
Therefore they don't know the experience as a person of color, where racism mainly from whites is the norm. Where you are the person negatively affected by white supremacy for the simple fact that you are not white. So when the victim points out that they are being done wrong, most white people do one of the 3:
          1. They support racism and justify it with illogical terms/actions.
          2. They deny, deny, and deny such things, and say the victim is over-reacting. You know the whole, "Get over it (because I really don't give a shit what you go through)" comment.
          3. Feels sorry, but does nothing about it.

But only a few actually do this: shut up and listen because you DON'T KNOW and will never UNDERSTAND. Then do something about it.

This is why I posted, IIN to think most white people are racist or just oblivious to racism.

            1) If white people can never understand, why are you bothering to try and educate me?

            2) If you think that white people can never understand, then you are seeing them as inferior, so you are being racist.

            3) Your definition of racist, regarding inferiority, is not the same as my definition. By my definition, and what I believe to be the generally accepted definition, be racist you merely need to stereotype members of a race, which you have done. Therefore, I define you as racist. I know that you are racist, because I have never met a white person who has done any of those things, and if you think that most white people do them, then you must be stereotyping from a very small number of unfortunate encounters.

            4) You say that white people are racist because they cannot be bothered to think about the views that society taught them. I could accuse you of the same, if you openned your eyes then you would see that the majority of whites are not racist.

It is blacks who are completely ignorant of racism, quick to cry about it and play the victim but when it comes to their own very abundant racist issues, they ignore it with "it's okay because black "people" can't be racist". There are almost no more "racist" people in america. Whites included, the experience you had was most likely someone stereotyping you as part of a CULTURE that is easy to detest. Although it is wrong to make generalizations, it is not totally inaccurate to assume a black person prescribes to the "nigger" culture. In your case you do not, but as a white person who grew up in a non racist world, i can say that i have had my fair share of black people be mean to me as well because i was white. Black people hold a resentment towards whites because of slavery and it will probably take a long time to overcome the bigotry from both sides.. As of right now, the bigotry is self reinforcing.

    North Asian
    South Asian
    East European
    Hispanic
    African

Who enforced laws to justify racism? Who tried to prove scientifically that another group of human beings were inferior? Who tried to justify racism with the BIBLE? Who reinforces white supremacy every single day by making themselves the media norm, the standard of beauty, the heroes we see on tv, the perfect and "normal" human being? Who denies their privilege over and over and say that someone is "being paranoid" or "overly sensitive"?
I love people like you (racist who prob. don't acknowledge it). Always oblivious, and in denial.

P.S. When did I ever state "those whites". I'm sure I stated "most white people". You and other replies on this post prove the very fact that most like to deny and try to flip the script to justify and ignore the real problem.
"We don't talk like that. You do"- What does that have to do with anything I posted? And you're proving your racist ways with the "us against them" mindset.

You can be mad at living white people for what they do, but don't be mad at living white people for what dead white people did. Black supremacists also use the Bible to justify their views. It makes some sense that white people are the media norm in the United States, considering they make up a majority of the population, if you wanna talk about white supremacy in the media, look at Mexico or Brazil. Blacks are probably over-represented in American professional sports, does that mean that the sports media is black supremacist?

Maybe biting into ever fishing line you are thrown is better? (I'm someone who annoys other people by trying to push their buttons. And someone who goes around biting in every angle is a great joy for me, they show their weakness by biting and I can feel superior.) I'm not saying ignore general racisme, but there will always be individuals. Nothing to do about.

And tbh discriminating on skin colour is a bit passé. I mean who cares. Now I'm not American, so it might be different there. Not meant as an insult, but it seems to be bit of an hype there. I mean I can never watch a black stand-up comedian on Comedy Central, because the jokes are either racist or seksist. And that might be fun there, but here it is just not a taboo.

And I feel there is nothing wrong with discriminating. I am one of the few people not afraid to not discriminate in my discriminating. So like I see the differences and generalise furniture. (Difference between tables and chairs.) I generalise and discriminate between humans and their skin colour. How can it not indicate something?:S Being too anti-discriminating is just ignorant, and playing into a hype. (Guilt trip maybe, I don't know, I'm Dutch, but don't feel guilty:D) Discriminate with care and all is fine. (Now I must emphasize that skin colour is a fairly weak indicator, generalisation is difficult, but not impossible.)

P.S. I first thought it was Alcoholics Anonymous, but that was a bit strange given the context.

What is the use of discrimination? It only reinforces racism, hence treating people unequally. Maybe if you were mature enough to realize that racism is the downfall of mankind, you would see that discrimination is useless, ignorant, and used by those not intelligent to see another person as an individual. And that whole "tables and chairs" analogy is absolutely pointless. We are human beings, not objects. The fact that you judge America based off of a television show, and any other media, shows your ignorance and lack of understanding. So why bother?

In all honesty you really *can't* do anything against other citizens for saying stupid stuff.

I know that hurts... I know there's the feeling of wanting to seek justice for being attacked like that but... hurting people's feelings sucks, but it's not illegal.

Don't mistake me however... I never said it was right to act like that. I think racial slurs are stupid and show a lack of etiquette and manners. I refuse to use *ANY*, regardless of what race it is. Hell I don't even use the racial slurs against Cardassians and they're not even real.

The problem is that you can't always force people to change.

The thing to remember is ... those idiots do not represent the majority. And yes, as I said above, I do think it's racist to assume that everyone - or even "most" of a race is the same way.

I mean if I went around and claimed that all of *your* race was the same, you would probably be offended by it. And rightfully so. It's never nice to judge anyone based off of how others act. You should ONLY judge them based off of how they themselves act.

Although the terminology used was racist, I would suggest it's more about some people's need to insult or offend others, because it 'amuses' them. I was walking down the street with a friend once and someone yelled "fat cow" as they drove past. She was so upset.

If there is anything about you that can be identified and someone who enjoys offensive behaviour can use it to victimise you, they will. Don't ever think everyone is like that, because they're not.
