I live in the country in a very old building and have ant problems every summer. I have never heard of using talcum powder to control them.
My weapon of choice is "Ant-B-Gone". It really works.
Yes they do have Scouts (not many) all throughout my room, but majority of the ants don't go past the window frame. If the ants are to go throughout the household. I would see a single-file line going down my wall.
I've put powder down once, but i couldn't stand watching them freak out. Also watching the ants that were left on the other side of the powder grouped up motionless waiting for someone new to brush past them knowing they would die like that i removed it.
IIN that when i see ants coming in my room i block the path with food¿

I think you're trolling but in case you're just ignorant: you are attracting them with that food!
You're going to end up with a LOT of ants in your house, including in your bed and your food and your clothes: enjoy all that itching, won't you?
You could always put a line of talcum powder or flour across where they're coming in or google for a non-lethal organic deterrent

Does the talcum powder do anything to stop them or just make them smell better and less susceptible to diaper rash?

I hope you have as much compassion for your fellow humans as you do for ants
