I think a lot of it has to do with people epistemologically privileging suffering over not suffering - the "real world" is a world where nothing is fair and people struggle to survive, so the more harsh a person's life or environment, the more "real" and "authentic" it is. People like to pretend like they're rough and made out of sterner stuff than they actually are.
