Black people did object to the erection of the statues at the time, but that didn't matter much because they didn't matter much.
Look into the history of these things. It has always been about racism, sometimes blatantly so.
By the way, Robert E. Lee himself didn't support Civil War monuments because he thought that countries which didn't erect reminders of civil conflict healed their divisions faster.
