Is it normal that people always seem to get confused after i speak?

The first situation is when I have trouble understanding what someone said and they stare at me confusingly for some moments.
The second one is when I attempt to explain something or engage in convo and end up with people asking to repeat myself all over again?
My voice can get shaky at times and some parts of the sentence may be lower than others but I think i'm speaking clearly enough so I don't know. I don't believe I did anything to make them confused or feel uncomfortable.

Is It Normal?

  • If you are the common factor then you are the issue.

  • Maybe is because you can’t hear yourself. I speak very low. I know I do because people says it to my face. But I can’t hear myself if I’m speaking low, normal, or loud. So I was taking a special class called speech. It really helped. So maybe you should take speech class to find out what’s the problem

  • Wat

but for real i used to have that problem. try to use more intonation. Also I think some people just jump to WHAT DID YOU SAY!? like it gives them some sort of power over you. it's usually older people (50+) who do that. like if you mumble even slightly as an aside note they take it as an offense thinking DAMN I CANT UNDERSTAND THESE YOUNGER GENERATION!!. yet i can barely hear their weak ass vocal cords either.

    • Get the fuck off my lawn, punk!

Seriously, though, have you considered that many older people have some degree of hearing loss? It could be due to military service, working for a few decades in a noisy environment or listening to music far too loud (my wife has crap hearing which she's sure is down to her having worked as a sound tech for very loud bands for a couple of years).

On the other side, teenage mumbling is a cliché that exists for a very good reason.

      • Older people naturally have some hearing loss, I know I do and recently acquired hearing aids which are a damned nuisance but helpful when I remember to actually wear them.

One huge issue I find hard to deal with is how fast many younger people speak: I get sick and tired of asking people to slow down so I can understand them

      • Yeah but that’s the thing, they only do it towards me even though they speak at the same volume or lower than I do. It's rude so I just straight up ignore it or say hang on cause I’m trying to think and don’t need some crusty eared douch yelling speak up when I'm basically talking to myself by that point. I can make up excuses for the mumbling too

  • Biggest reason that happens to me is cause my voice is pretty quiet I have to speak more loud and clear. One of my new coworkers is also this way so she’s always saying huh? After everything I say makes me talk super slow so she can process everything. And I’m always doing it back cause I swear she whispers to me. I have great hearing but I myself have this problem too. Whole days a mixture of “huh, what, the fuck did you say?” Tells me to speak up but I gotta say it back even more. I never thought I mumbled as much as I did either till others told me. But I feel like after I started talking louder that fixed it. I just never realize how quiet my voice is I guess.

  • Are you a non native speaker with a heavy accent, or perhaps a person with a speech impediment?
