Is it normal that nobody knows what straight means?

Why are so many questions that involve the OP being sexually attracted to the same gender prefaced by,'I'm a straight guy,' or 'I'm a straight girl?' By definition, if you are attracted to the gender that you are, then you are not straight. You can definitely be bi, and it sounds like a ton of people are, but straight means you are exclusively attracted to members of the opposite gender.

Is It Normal?

  • Instead of focusing on labels, try thinking of sexuality as a spectrum. There will be people who are fiercely at either end, but there are also people who can be curious about sexual encounters with the same sex, even though their main preference is for the opposite sex. Someone who falls exactly in the middle of that spectrum, or fairly close to it, would be considered bisexual because they have a somewhat equal interest in both sexes.

We are humans who linguistically love labels for everything and not everyone understands sexuality beyond those specific labels. When their feelings don't fit exactly within those rigid labels, they start questioning themselves.

  • Another one that bugs me is when someone says I'm not racist but and then says something racist

  • I believe that everyone is inherently bi. Under the right circumstances, most any straight person would experiment with someone of the same gender. I think what makes them straight vs. bi is that a bi person admits they would like to have sex with someone of the same gender where someone who is straight isn't looking for that, but under the right circumstances might do it. I am straight but I have sucked a dick once.

  • Another situation like this that bugs me is "I I like it when my girlfriend touches my butt, am I gay?" like its that instead of actually wanting a dick in it that makes you gay.

  • I think it doesnt exist nobody 100% hetero. If the majority of your sexual acts are hetero, you are hetero. If the majority of tour sexual relationship are homo, you are homo.

    • Then what's the point of the designation, "Bisexual?"

      • People like labels and like to categorize.

      • I guess bissexual is a person who has half/half (more or less) sexual intercourses with both sexes. Or a person who has periods of heterosexuality and homosexualiaty in equal proportions, without predominance for either of them in particular. It's not so common but it's no so rare too.

        • No.

Straight is attraction and desire for the opposite sex.

Gay is attraction and desire for the same sex.

          Anywhere in between is bi.

If you sucked a dick once. You're not straight. D'uh.
It doesn't matter if you found a cock lodged down the back of your throat once, or fifty times. If you're a man and get aroused by such activity or engage in such activity, you are not straight.

  • I assume that it is due to the pressure and taboo of being gay. Traditionally in the western and religious cultures, being straight was normal. Anything else could be considered an perversion. Being straight and monogamous was wholesome. These beliefs have carried on and still exist today. Many people still assume that people are automatically straight, until they learn otherwise. Still some can't conceive a person not being a heterosexual. As such, society tends to put pressures on people to live up to being straight. The ones who ask these questions, are most likely a by-product of this belief system. They probably live in homophobic environments and/or fear disappointing their friends and family. They don't want to entertain the possibility of being gay, yet they can't help but to question it. So, they ask on here hoping that they'll find out that the they are straight.

  • so if a guy likes to stick a giant rubber dong in his butt when rubbing one out but is only attracted to women by your definition he is "straight"

  • My definition of straight is someone who is sexually and emotionally attracted to people of the opposite sex and willing to have a relationship with. It's just the definition I give to it so take no offense anybody!

  • Your own comment states nothing about exclusive attraction. By your comment, someone can definitely be straight and find their minds wondering about their gender.

I think that thoughts and feelings are everchanging, that you're not defined by thoughts, but by choices. Feelings that stick are definitive, but feelings that are meant to serve as questions aren't definitive.
