    I think your friend might be jealous of you now being safe and wishes they were safe themself. Plenty of people have fled civil war and/or persecution. It's a natural human instinct and I don't think you are cowardly for wanting safety.

    You are not a coward. Unless you were actually in the fighting or strongly believe and openly support one of the sides then you don't need to be there. Better to be somewhere safe and not in war.

    This is, unfortunately, often a successful strategy for survival in times of turmoil (leaving).
    The fighting in Syria should have been avoidable. It is a symptom of an hierarchical power structure in nation-states. This conflict should have been resolvable through negotiation.
