Is it normal that my friend is overly obsessed with a fictional character?

(This is kind of long but read if you're interested. Or just bored. READ. And p/s: I AM NOT A TROLL. ALL OF THIS IS TRUE.)

My friend is obsessed with a guy from an anime(let's call him A). At first me and my friends were okay with her obsessing with A, because we've been through that point where we went crazy for a fictional character.

But soon we realized that it wasn't an ordinary obsession. I mean, she is TOO OBSESSED with him. Why? Read on.

She talks and thinks about him all the time. Nothing weird right? But get this. She packs her own lunch to school. And then she would show off her lunch to us, saying that "My husband A made it for me!' and then we were like, "Okay..." *creeping out* She does this like, almost every day.

Then it became worse. When the food she brought wasn't nice/wasn't cooked enough or had any problems with it, she would say "OMG. This food (insert problem here). I'm going to go home and scold A for not preparing the food properly." and her expressions are so.freaking.real. NO JOKE. As if this A existed. We all knew clearly that she prepared the food herself, and we were certain that she's too obsessed with him. So I went to tell her nicely online that this guy is just a fictional character. And doesn't exist.

Guess what? She ignored me for the whole day at school. My friend came to tell me that she told her this: "(my name) told me that A was a fictional character and doesn't exist because (my name) wanted to snatch A away from me." SHE ALMOST CRIED WHILE TELLING IT TO MY FRIEND. I was like...'The $#%@$@ is wrong with you?' And she often tells us that she and A had sex and tells us all the sex-scenes in detail. She even blushed while telling it! And she calls us up often and makes those orgasmic noises on the phone and says that "A is touching me." "A is massaging me." "A's muscles are so...SO HOT."

GAH. And get this. She keeps telling us that she's pregnant with A's twins. She keeps rubbing her tummy as if there were really twins in there. And she drew and made a custom ink stamp of her and A's family crest(a symbol that
represents a family I think). And she keeps showing it off. And there was once where a girl from the popular clique talks crap about A(my friend told everyone that she's going to get married to A) and she goes emo the WHOLE. FREAKING.DAY. How do we know? We actually asked her why is she so emo. She said it's because of that girl making fun of A. We literally facepalmed.

She created a marriage cert. for herself and A. She even created a Facebook account for A and set A as 'married to (her name)'. She signs in as A and talks to herself and to us. SHE IS CREEPING US OUT.

She is driving us mad. IS IT NORMAL TO BE THIS OBSESSED WITH A FICTIONAL CHARACTER? Thank you.

P/s: She is 17.

Is It Normal?

  • Maybe it's some kind of coping mechanism, I don't know. You should just let her do what she wants to do, and if you're really so worried, talk to someone else that you trust.

  • It's seriously not normal. Talking about A constantly and even pretending that A prepared the lunch for her could still be acceptable, but denying that A's a fictional character and faking all the sex-scenes/marriage/pregnancy are really over the top.

It seems to me that your friend is seriously delusional. I don't think that she is able to distinguish her own imagination from the reality anymore. It's very possible that she believes all the things she does to be REAL.

Maybe it's her extreme obsession/loneliness that has given her the hallucination. This is such a serious case. I think you and your friend should really tell the teachers/social-workers at your school about her situation as soon as possible. She needs to consult a psychotherapist. She needs professional help to get through this delusion.

Meanwhile, I think you and your friend may avoid any topic related to A, even when she brings it up. It'd even be better if you and your friend can distract her by inviting her to engage in different activities, though I know it's hard.

I wish she can be back to normal soon! Best of luck!

    • I agree a lot with what Jen said, but perhaps it's not as... serious, or dire. I'm not saying it's not a problem, but it could be very important to her in a way.

Sometimes we use things like fictional characters to cope with really difficult things. She may very well have gone through (or is going through) something that's really hard on her, and this is her way to cope with it.

I do think that she should see help, but from a professional. As much as you and your friends care (and it's wonderful that you do!) it's really difficult to break through the fantasy and bring her back to reality, and doing so can sometimes cause a lot of damage, destroying her coping mechanism when she needs it the most.

It will probably sound scary for me to suggest this, but if you really are worried, it's OK to tell someone like your school's guidance counselor, or her mom. It might feel like you're betraying her in a way, but I think it could help. You don't have to, though. She could very well get over this phase on her own, or get bored with it. Use your judgment, and as annoying as it probably is just remember that you care about her, and that's what's most important.

  • I make jokes like this too, since I'm a pretty big anime fan, so imo, it's pretty normal. I only act like that with people I feel confident being around and with people that wouldn't judge me for acting like that. If it's really bothering you, just act cold whenever she brings up 'A' and hopefully, she'll take the hint.

What anime is 'A' from, can I ask?
