Is it normal that my family makes fun of my sexual orientation?

i'm gay. when i first came out, people made fun of me. my parents and my sisters stuck up for me to people and i'm very appreciative of it.

this is my problem: they make more jokes, if not more, than other people do. i asked them to stop, but they said that it was ok for them to do it because they're family. this is my view: i would expect them to not make fun of me about it because i get enough of it from other people. i'm never able to just escape from them and they're stupid gay jokes.

is it normal for them to be this way? please leave comments. thanks.

It's very cool that they accept you and are able to joke about it, however as some people said, a normal family would stop joking around a subject that hurts a family member.

in my family, we tease each other constantly about things, and its fine. If someone does get mad, we will stop.

If you are sensitive to their jokes then they should make an effort to be a little easier on you. However, you should count your blessings that they love and accept you and are able to joke around with you. Try to give them a little credit too..maybe ease up on being so sensitive. When I told my mom that I was a lesbian I finished the confession with..."and it's all your fault". She cracked up laughing and all tension was erased. My family and I joke about it often and I enjoy it. I do realize that not everyone copes the same way though. Perhaps the problem actually lies within you. It doesn't sound like you have fully accepted who you are and I know that's rough at a young age. Be proud of who you are and be proud of your wonderful family.

Your family should respect you. If it was my family doing it I'd tell them to shut the f*ck up and mind their own business! (my parents are homophobes so I'm not coming out to them any time soon anyways, but still....)

You don't tease them for the way they act, they shouldn't tease you.

Seriously, you're straight, so by your logic, should I make jokes about you? I didn't think so.

OP, I don't think it's right they do that, I would never make a joke about my friends or my brother's sexuality because it's not respectful.
