I agree that if he feels they deserve a tip and you don't he should tip. But discrepancies in how shared experiences (like sharing a meal at a resturant) won't fly for long. Part of it is if they feel the service was not that bad then it seems that you are being cheap and inconsiderate. But losing the afinity of a shared reality matters a whole lot no matter what. My boyfriend tips like me, .50 for worst service; 15% for average and up to 25% for spectacular service...we talk about the tip ad well before we leave and our opinions never vary widely.
