I believe it's a defense mechanism to keep the "good guys" away from you. Since you know that only sleaze balls will hit on you while you are wearing a wedding ring, you protect yourself from anyone who might be a future prospect. When you are ready for a serious relationship, I think you'll put the ring away in your jewelry box.
