Is it normal that i wake up feeling like i'm choking?

Sometimes either when I'm originally trying to get to sleep or when I've just woken up from sleep in the middle of the night I feel like I'm choking because my esophagus feels like it's wider than it should be and I can't swallow so I freak out because I can't breathe properly. It only really happens when the weather's cold and I get blocked up sinuses though.

  • If this is something that is recurrent and ongoing, it's a symptom of sleep apnea and you should consider seeing your doctor to have a sleep study done.

  • Normal if you are experiencing congestion. Try not to freak out, just sit up and breathe as well as you can until your breathing normalises: freaking out will only make it worse
