Is it normal that i took pain medication, even though i literally never do?

I'm one of those people who absolutely refuse to take medicine because they would rather use natural remedies for whatever ailments they have. I would only take a pill if I was literally going to die if I don't take that pill. Any other time though, I've only stuck to using natural remedies, even to treat pain.

But I actually had a really bad migraine today (7/10/2021) and it lasted for 7 hours straight. It would not go away and the pain became more and more unbearable as the time passed. After it was already late at night (around 9pm), I could not deal with the pain anymore because it was so excruciating.

I ended up getting up from my bed and took some pills that I knew would knock that migraine out. What I took was 10mg of Maxalt (rizatriptan) and 800mg of ibuprofen because they work better together. I'm feeling so much better after taking my meds. Actually, I feel so good and relaxed after taking that Maxalt and I don't regret it one bit.

Never got people who reject modern medicines and perfer the "natural" remedies. Where do you think most over the counter drugs were originally sourced from?

Also the people who say they want to cut down on chemicals... everything is chemicals you can make anything sound bad when you apply its scientific name to it. Such as dihydrogen monoxide also known as H20 aka water.

It's normal to take something for it when one has a migraine.

        • You are very welcome! I would not have been able to guess that due to your kindness, but I hope I helped you feel less grumpy.

I can be kinda not so nice when it comes to certain things.

            • Even if that's true, it makes sense because there's things that people are strongly against, which would make it harder to be nice.

  • I hate pills too I only take pain meds for my recurring headaches but I stopped a few years ago. Now I only take them if the headache is so bad it interferes with my day or ability to fall asleep and of course when I have the worst of period cramps because otherwise I would not live through it lol.
I've had some terrible headaches that lasted long myself. A year ago I had a migraine which lasted all night and I was totally out of pain meds... Headache was so bad I nearly vomited... Not fun. Now I always make sure to have it at home even if I dont take it often.

    • You seem to have it all figured out with the balance of taking the meds and not taking them. This is definitely a good way to avoid medication overuse headaches. I think I should live by your way of doing things when it comes to taking meds because I agree with it 100%.

I also happen to get horrific period cramps. I think those are just as bad as the migraines. But since I hated taking pills, I would just use a heating pad to help with the pain. It would help a lot, but only if I stayed on it for some time. The moment I got up, I felt like I was being stabbed in the uterus again. Obviously, the heating pad remedy is not practical for work.

I can totally have sympathy for you about the long and excruciating headaches. I'm sorry you ran out of pain meds and had such an awful experience. My supply of medication is very limited at the moment, so I'm going to reapply for county insurance so that I can start visiting the doctor and getting my meds again. Keeping them at home (even if rarely taken) is a great idea and an awesome safety net to fall back on.

I used to be one of those stoics. I say used to be but I had *horrible* ovarian pain over the weekend that lasted hours. Cold drinks bottles over the affected area and ibuprofen barely made a dent in it, and I only reluctantly did the latter even though I was yelling in pain.

Today, on my second round of ibuprofen because of cramps. Still feel crap but I'm not currently in any pain.
