It's a bad idea in the beginning, but for the type of society we live in and how everything works, it's quite necessary. But seeing as most of the worlds currency is just a number in a computer server and not actually redeemable for gold (no where near enough gold). We just succeeded in turning light into matter a few months ago. So maybe replicators and the star trek utopia isn't far away. It all comes down to people being selfis and petty and asking "what's in it for me?" When they offer a good or service. But it's a good question when resources aren't free.
