Is it normal that i think having pets was one of humanity’s worst ideas?

I don’t et why people would want to invest so much time and money in keeping an animal they get nothing from. I understand keeping an animal that will provide you with food or wool/leather but why keep a dog or cat just because you think it’s cute. I personally hate pets and every time I see someone with one I want to kick it across the room. Why bother having a snarling animal that just leaves mess everywhere?

  • Because they do actually have a purpose. Besides keeping loneliness away, some animals, such as dogs, can be used for working purposes. Breeds like the Rottweiler, GSD, Belgian Shepherd, Husky, Malamute, were all used as hardcore working breeds throughout most of their history and they still are in many areas today. Other breeds such as hounds, Labradors, beagles, terriers, poodles, and some bloodlines of pitbull have all been used in hunting. If you look at the history of any breed really, there is a purpose they can be used for. There are few exceptions to this rule, but most do have an actual reason to be here.

The breed I have are sheep herders used on sheeps farms across Australia. They do a better job than a four wheeler and are more reliable.

Mine are also trained service dogs that do hospital visits and are seizure observers. They can warn owners of oncoming seizures and are also able to detect cancer in patients. Amazing animals.

Yeh. Dogs have served all these purposes listed above, they have also served as protection from and warning of an intruder, or a fire (if anyone has ever been dumb enough to fall asleep leaving something burning). Dogs save lives.

Very true. Even when I was a kid, I noticed how the houses of the bigger jerk bully kids from school had both more hostile parents and meaner dogs that bit and attacked. It's a packaged situation, either the whole household is nicer or the whole household is more hostile, parents, kids, and dogs. It's all contagious.

They serve a purpose you are just to dim to understand what it is. I'll educate you in the topic though. What pets are referred to as are companion animals. They are meant to be a companion. In other words a type of moral support. Along with that some companion animals also serve a second purpose. Which is guarding, attack and watch animals. So it's not abnormal people keep pets, you just don't have a high enough brain capacity or knowledge to get why they keep them.

Ha, another first worlder. I'm going to guess you live in a city. while I can agree when it comes to some pets, Like rats, others are very helpful.

Why cats? Cats keep rodents, insects, and small reptiles from the homes and food of humans. Even in ancient Egypt cats were revered for their hunting abilities. You try catching a mouse with your bare hands.

Why dogs? Well dogs are kept by humans for a variety of reasons hunting and protection are only two. Now I mean medium sized dogs or larger. A Chihuahua is just a loud rat to me.

People can have pets if they want, or not have them if they don't want, it's their personal choice. The main reason why some types of animals are kept as pets like cats and dogs, and others are reserved for observing in the wild like bears and lions, is that keeping the latter in your house as pets would be just a tad bit too dangerous.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Yeah, the way people keep pets now is kinda dumb. Unless they're serving a purpose like a sheep herding dog or mouse catching cat then there's no point. The friendship excuse only works if you live in the woods or have no friends. Otherwise you're holding an animal captive for your own amusement.

    • Some people don’t do well with making human friends. Animals don’t judge you and won’t dump you over minor things. Animals make much better friends in my opinion than people.
And if you were talking about wild animals I could understand what you’re saying, but dogs and cats are domesticated. They’ve been bred to be companions and workers for humans for literally thousands of years, they like being with people. If you were to set a dog or cat free into the wild, it would probably die within the first week.

but that just reinforces the debate the pet owners hold animals captive , all you did was give the cause pet owners capture animals as slave property. if hell exist pet owners are going to get payback for all this. those animals all belong in the wild not some back yard or living room. dont be surprised if your pet is set free some day with a new law.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • Yeah, domestic animals are meant to be captive. They don’t think like wild animals do nor do they long to be free. Ever notice how even when a dog gets loose, it always tries to come back home? Dogs may have decended from wolves, but thousands of years of domestication have ensured that they no longer behave or think exactly as wolves do. If you set a pet wolf free, it would probably die due to having no experience with the wild, but it’s wild genes at least give it a chance. If you set a domestic dog loose it would almost certainly die. A lot of dogs don’t even have a drive to chase or hunt anymore, and the ones that do are nowhere near as adept at hunting as wild wolves.

            • Goldfish have not been selectively bred for thousands of years. Dogs have. People dump their dogs all the time in my area and they usually end up getting hit by cars or disappearing.
Maybe if someone selectively bred dogs to be more independent and learn to hunt for themselves that could work.
But most dogs like your every day pit or lab don’t stand a chance on their own in the wild.

              Comment Hidden ( show )
      • You've got a point with domesticated animals. But that breeding creates problems for them, like selecting looks over strength or health. Often a lot of inbreeding takes place too.

There are other animals that simply have no business being pets, like parrots. They live out their days confined to a cage, forced to mimic whatever bullshit the owner spews. They're fed artificial food and denied the opportunity to do what all birds are supposed to - fly.

And then there's this mentality that animals are oh-so cute and people should take them in if they're injured. Often the animals they nurse end up dying anyway or attacking them, or they are invasive species that should've been left to die. House sparrows for instance are invasive in North America, yet go on Youtube and you'll find tons of vids of people keeping baby sparrows, obviously unaware what they are. Western Australia eradicates every house sparrow they find.

        • True. I only support ethical breeding. People who breed for short faces or sloped back and such just because it’s cute I don’t agree with.
With the sparrows though, it’s not really their fault. They didn’t ask to be brought to areas they’re not supposed to be in. I don’t think they should be killed, but babies that people find shouldn’t be released back into the wild.

My cat is affectionate and playful. We recently lost our little pug but he was like my shadow. Dogs and cats desire to be with humans. They provide companionship and love. However, I don't understand people who keep things like snakes and other wild animals.

Dogs were originally domesticated as wolves to provide protection, however some dog breeds today are still trained to do that. You can train domesticated animals to do many useful tasks, dogs can be trained as service dogs, guard dogs, rescue and retrieving, hunting, herding dogs, etc. but this isn't limited to dogs, a large breed of rat has been trained to sniff out mines!

It's in human nature to reach out to other people (or species) it's the reason why we've domesticated so many animals that were previously feral. Each animal has a purpose, even if their not working they can serve as a companion and friend; which a lot of people seem to need and they can help us emotionally in times of need.

I mean an example would be my mum who underwent surgery removing her uterus due to PCOS, after the surgery she was feeling suicidal and depressed until one of her friends gifted her a pet kitten. She tells me to this day that if she didn't have her cat she would of likely committed suicide.

There's even been research and studies on this; it's a fact that people with dogs/cats/animals are more likely to feel happier.

It depends on the person really. For me, being disabled, my pets actually give me a lot. I keep parrots and they are very affectionate, the sensation of petting their feathers is very calming for my and it makes me feel a lot less lonely. If pets aren't your thing that's fine, maybe you have everything you need without a pet which is fine and if that's the case, great for you. (not being snippy, I just suck at wording things)

Different people have different needs, some get something from having pets, some don't. It all depends on the person.

pet owners , are a funny lot, the animal is just surviving is human captivity , its being held hostage and falls into the stockholm syndrome where it likes its kidnappers . In the end ,the only living thing that can stand them is the pet , as they grow more detached from the realm of humanity

Not all animals are "captive". Cats, chickens, etc. are often allowed to roam freely outside. I'm sure if they hated their owners so much they'd just up and leave. I mean I have three cats since they were babies, they wander around the farm all the time and always come back so I don't know what you're talking about lol
