  • Smokers continue to do it because they're addicted, not because they want to die. I'm speaking as someone with COPD/emphysema who smoked for decades and wasn't diagnosed until after I'd quit.

    • Sorry to hear that. It's very sad what the tobacco industry did to so many people, just sad. But for you personally, that's awful - I know you don't/didn't want to die. I used to smoke too, and it's so hard to give up ..nearly impossible for a lot of people. Until it gives *them* up...

      • I'm lucky that it was diagnosed early and now some years after diagnosis I've maintained the lung function level I had then, with the right breathing & other exercises and puffers. I just have to stay away from air pollution as much as possible, including other people's cigarette smoke.

        • That's good that hasn't kept getting worse then. And at least there's not as much cigarette smoke around now as there used to be.
          Honestly, I still like the smell when I walk past it... But obviously I see how irritating it could be.

          • I can't stand the smell of tailor mades, rollies not so bad and the smell of a joint makes me very nostalgic!
