I'll try any meat at least once even human if I get the opportunity. That said I'd rather not eat a horse. I grew up when I was little with horses. They taught me alot..

In a survival situation would I? Only if the horse was suffering. If they weren't I'd set them free and figure something else out.

    • Why is horsemeat so taboo in the english-speaking world? Here in Sweden, people didn't really care that Ikea meatballs were made of horsemeat.

Id never eat horse meat. Thats an honorable animal that has served man for a long time. Doesnt seem right to eat such a great animal. Cows are for food. Not horses.

I've never tried it, but I owned and rode horses for years, lol.

I think I would be skeptical about actually trying it because I know how the horse market works, how kill buyers have a tendency to be very dishonest, and how horses who have had bute (a very commonly used painkiller for horses that is extremely toxic, I believe even fatal, to humans) and other medications/vaccines/etc. in their system recently still end up in the slaughter pipeline despite the kill buyers stating otherwise.

Since many of the horses slaughtered in Mexico and Canada at least were not raised for meat and were actually pets not long ago (it's actually pretty sad, as kill buyers will inquire about free and cheap horses that are usually unrideable or needing to retire and promise the owners a great retirement in a pasture for life, then turn around and sell them for meat; one of the reasons I always refused to try to "rehome" unrideable or barely rideable horses, give any away for free, or sell below kill price, as this isn't uncommon at all and there was actually a case with a vet student doing exactly this with tons of horses), it's not certain if they still have drugs in their system that make the meat unfit for human consumption (and in the case of unrideable horses with health issues, it's very likely they have had bute or something similar in their system very recently). I believe this is probably why horse slaughter and horse meat consumption was banned in the US.

I actually read of a case in Canada in which two stolen horses that had recently had medications/vaccines were slaughtered and since the person who took them there signed a form stating they had had no meds/vaccines within the last 6 months, I believe it was, and that they were indeed the rightful owner of the horses, the slaughter of them proceeded. It was only when the rightful owner reached out that they had to recall the meat (and tons more that may have come into contact with it) due to this. So, it just doesn't seem as safe to eat horse meat to me. I'm sure there are loopholes and risks with other types of meat as well, but usually cattle/pigs/chickens/etc. are bred and raised for human consumption (or at least were not former pets that have meds/vaccines in their systems that make their meat unfit for consumption).

I don't want to ever know what horsemeat is like simply on principle alone.

Several countries eat horses, and there’s a glut of wild horses in the Midwest fight now.
