I'm not sure if I'm describing it properly, but I think part of it is that it's a life simulator that runs on real time(theres usually events on holidays.) You get to decide everything on the island. The house you live in, what the town looks like, what furniture and infrastructures go where, and to an extent the residents too. Since none of the customizations can be achieved overnight, it keeps a person coming back for more.

Right now, people seem to be using it in place of going out due to quarantine. They play together online and shop in each others shops, trade items, and explore each others islands. I know people who gathered together to date, celebrate birthdays, and one held an in game funeral for a pet who was cremated.

That would destroy my life like Runescape did 15 years ago. Think I'll stick to my single player murdering innocent civilians games.
