Is it normal that i'm mildly interested in becoming a mortician?

It's considered an unpleasant job by many people, so I have a flicker of hope that getting a job dealing with death would be easier?

I'm not mean, but I have the stomach for it.

Aside from the practical reasons, my picture of being a mortician is having a quiet, solemn, and sincere job.

I'd want to deal solely with the bodies, rather than anything to do with the grieving families and friends. I'm kind of bad with people already, so I'd be in over my head.

Plenty of people want to be morticians, only some of them want to have sex with the bodies...

In that business the phrase "Want to stop off and suck a couple of cold ones after work" doesn't mean what you think it means.

NEVER a shortage of work. Not to sound horrible, but people die every day. Kinda like landscapers, the grass will always grow!
It's an honest living working with the dead. Be respectful!!!

On the one hand, someone needs to deal with dead people. On the other, some morticians exploit people at a very vulnerable and highly emotional time and extract money from them which could be better spent elsewhere.

It would be a good idea for you to contact local morticians to say you're interested in the profession, and ask if you can have an informal chat with them about what the job is like. Most people enjoy talking about their work, and they'd probably be willing to talk if you come across as genuinely interested. I assume morticians do get contacted by weirdos who get off on the idea of messing around with corpses, so you need to be very clear in your mind about what you'd bring to the job, and why it appeals to you.

  • 2 years minimum to get your AS in mortuary, and up to 4 more years as an apprentice before becoming fully licensed depending where you live. Somebody has to do it. Good luck.

I was in the funeral industry for years. It's not what most people imagine. It's not disgusting in the way you'd expect, but there are disgusting things that you don't. Dealing with families can be very tough. Children are ALWAYS hard. The pay is terrible, unless you own the funeral home.

However, at the end of the day you feel like you've accomplished something and helped someone.
