Society might "gather together again" but it wouldn't be for hundreds of years. Look at the fall of Rome and the Middle Ages afterward... then consider how we're going to fall about 100x as far and crash about 100x as hard.

Even if society did collapse people would, by instinct, gather together again. That's how it all got started.
