  • My dad is an alcoholic and my mother was an alcoholic before I was born. All my grandparents were alcoholics. I am 19 years old. Despite all of this, I am not an alcoholic. I haven't even tried it once in my entire life

    • Good for you! It's probably best that you not ever try it.

However, not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic. I don't have any alcoholics inf my family, but there's still loads on dysfunction.

    • Good for you.. But if you grew up in a dysfunctional alcoholic family you still need therapy.. If not alcoholism, you're definitely still gonna have or already have some type of mental issue. Sorry bout you're fam but just remember that they are ill and have dysfunctional brains and don't take it too personally if you can coz it's just gonna mess you up more.

    • Considering your family history, it's wise of you to avoid alcohol. There's evidence that alcoholism can be inherited, so it's possible (maybe even likely) that your genes mean you'd find drinking difficult to control if you ever started.

Binge drinking and habitual high consumption of alcohol is a real problem in the UK, but recent surveys have found that around a quarter of people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four never drink at all. I don't know where you live, but you can be sure you're not unique, and you'll feel a lot better and be a lot healthier (and wealthier) if you don't drink.
