I understand where you're coming from, and can respect your point of view, but I disagree.
My second ex-husband was an alcoholic. I dumped him after three months, because all he wanted to do was get drunk, and play video games. He probably would have loved to smoke weed, but I stopped buying weed, because I'm not an addict, and I was annoyed.
We met at work, and he seemed normal enough, but after he got fired all he wanted to do was drink and play videogames, and I ain't got time for that bullshit!

No, just the dumbass losers you associate with cause the problems and I'm guessing by "our society" you mean the USA and/or Australia.
Every year in the US, alcohol kills more than twice as many people than guns.
(88,000 alcohol related deaths annually. Source- CDC)
