I don't think it's a bad thing to follow trends you genuinely like, but have never seen the point of doing something merely for the fact that it is currently "in" rather than for the fact that you like it. I've never really gotten the point of following trends, myself. I just like what I like.
What I have a problem with is when people are really pushy and uppity/snobby about trends and almost act as if it's a necessity to follow them and like anything not trendy is automatically of a lower class. I've noticed this is really a problem with home decor/design, as I have a very dated '60s time capsule of a house that I personally love the look of, yet have gotten tons of very pushy unsolicited advice to "modernize" it, and even when told that I like the way it looks as is (and that I really do not care for the current minimalist and grayscale trends that every other house around here is decorated like, and do not want a house like that), I am told "well, you could just remodel a bit at a time". I'm told "other people do not like this dated style", but as far as I'm concerned, until these "other people" start paying my bills, they don't get a say in how I decorate, and their opinions about my property sure as hell aren't more important than my own!
I also don't like the attitude that just because something is dated/out of style means it is awful and needs to be updated, and/or that someone is borderline crazy for liking it. It is absolutely okay to like different things and have your own taste, and who cares if it is something from the past that is not "in" anymore? I do not get the obsession some people have with liking the exact same things as everyone else and being terrified that others might not approve of their taste. Who cares? I don't share the same taste as a lot of people. It doesn't really matter, as we are all individuals and that is a good thing. The world would be a very boring place if everyone liked all of the same stuff (and quite frankly, the lack of selection with a lot of things due to the focus on current trends and keeping up with the Joneses gets pretty boring).
It's also not necessary to need to be told what to like and dislike. To be honest, most trends are just a way for companies to get people to spend money on things they don't need by convincing them that what they currently have is "too dated", regardless of whether it serves its purpose just fine.
IIN That I look down on people who follow trends?
