It's probably the subtle differences in the sound hardware on the devices, e.g. I noticed from years of iPod listening that the metallic nanos have a more bright, energetic sound, the classic 5g is dull, unclear and low on treble, and the touch 4g is a more clearer but unspectacular all-rounder. It's on a very audiophilic level.
