Is it normal that i have urges to steal stuff?

Sometimes I have urges to just take stuff when the occasion comes. The last time was at the grocery store where I could have stolen a few items and that would mean that I have more money left to myself, but at the very last second I do the right thing and pay for the items. If the item is small and nobody is looking I would slowly hide it up my sleeve but I fear I will get caught so I just pay for it before the urge comes back. In the past I stole from a gas station multiple times and from grocery stores. I also stole from friends when I was a kid, just a few toys. I have ADHD and I just do risky and compulsive things without thinking. I get these urges when I am sure I can get away with it but I then think of God and how he will be disappointed in me.

Is It Normal?

  • You have kleptomania. It is a real problem. We used to have to hide all our handbags during parties because of a certain friend. You can get professional help for it.

  • Stealing from an entity is victimless crime so I wouldn't judge it very harshly. Especially given this used to be my teenage hobby

  • Stealing from mom and pop places or individual people who don't deserve it is wrong, but stealing from large retail chains or rich people is completely morally fine.

  • Most chain stores here won’t prosecute unless you take £50 worth of stuff, they probably have a similar rule in the US as well so you’re probably alright just taking it.

    • In California you can steal up to $950 (£700) without arrest or prosecution. We love the homeless here, hate businesses and employed people.

    • Where exactly is that? What shall 'won't prosecute' even mean on behalf of businesses under UK law? I thought prosecution is an activity linited to.. prosecutors? Is minor theft a crime subject to private prpsecution under common law?
If they apprehend a thief, won't the store secirity call thr cops and let them handle you?
