Is it normal that i have trouble recognising other people’s emotions?

I have trouble recognising what other people are feeling and responding to things in a emotional manner.

For example, a family friend was in a car accident recently and my family and I were talking to her about it. Afterwards my parents were talking about how sorry they felt for her and how she was almost crying when talking about it. I had thought that she was no longer upset and was recounting it calmly.

I also don’t really like to express my own emotions. I know very clearly what my feelings are and would have no problem articulating them, it’s just that I see no point in doing so and when a friend is going through something emotional I will try to offer ways to fix the problem but never bother giving emotional support.

When I was a child I used to try and copy other people’s reactions so that my parents wouldn’t think I was abnormal.

I’ve not been diagnosed with any autism spectrum disorder, nor do I have the symptoms/signs of any, which is usually what people say if I bring this up.

  • There is no need to label yourself with the latest fad disorder.

Everyone is different and everyone deals with emotions in their own way.

Unless something negatively affects your life I wouldn't worry too much about it.

    • Definitely. Some people are more logical with life and react differently to certain occasions. I don't see a problem with it.

As you said, unless there's no negative effects, it's okay.

    • I though I was a sociopath when I was a teenager. I later recognized that I just have a more pragmatic way of life; nothing out of the ordinary.

  • You're probably autistic. It is hard for your kind to understand people's emotions.

  • Have you been to a psychiatrist? There could be many different reasons for your emotional detachment, such as dissociative disorder or psychopathy. Or maybe you just aren't a very empathetic person.
